History, tower and view<\/h4>

The Grey Lighthouse in Skagen was built in 1858 to a design by architect N. S. Nebelong, replacing the former white lighthouse. Standing at 46 metres tall, it is Denmark's second-highest lighthouse and has guided maritime traffic around Skagen Odde and the Kattegat for over 160 years. The lighthouse's architecture is simple and robust, built from unpainted brick \u2013 hence the name The Grey Lighthouse.<\/p>

Today, visitors can climb the 210 steps to the top of the tower and enjoy the magnificent panoramic view of Skagen, Grenen, and the two seas that meet at Denmark's northernmost point. In the lighthouse keeper's residence, the history of the lighthouse's construction, technical development, and role through the ages is told. Here, one gains insight into the history of both seafaring and the area, and one can still sense the atmosphere that has characterised the place since the 19th century.<\/p>

Following an extensive restoration, the Grey Lighthouse stands today as a listed cultural monument and a modern visitor centre. The lighthouse is open to guests for most of the year, and a visit to the top is an unforgettable experience, offering views as far as the eye can see \u2013 over the sea, dunes, and Skagen's unique natural landscape.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Wingbeats and birdlife at the Grey Lighthouse<\/h4>

Behind the walls of the lighthouse keeper's residence lies a vibrant interpretive centre focused on bird migration, nature, and the many winged visitors that pass through Skagen each year. Here, you can experience the \u201cWingbeats\u201d exhibition, where sound, images, and interactive elements tell the story of the birds' journeys, their adaptations, and the unique birdlife at Grenen.<\/p>

Skagen is one of Northern Europe's best locations for experiencing migratory birds, and every spring and autumn, thousands of birds of prey, small birds, and seabirds pass through the area. Adjacent to the lighthouse, the Skagen Bird Observatory works to observe, record, and ring-mark birds, and visitors can often follow the work up close.<\/p>

The exhibition provides both children and adults with a deeper understanding of nature's connections and the forces that drive the birds' impressive journeys. Today, Det Gr\u00e5 Fyr is a focal point for nature communication, knowledge and experiences \u2013 a place where you get close to both the sky, the sea and the life in between them.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
