Skagen Salmon

Innovative land-based salmon farming in Skagen

Skagen is home to Skagen Salmon, a high-tech and innovative company focusing on modern, land-based salmon farming. Here, quality salmon are farmed in an advanced, closed-loop system where technology, animal welfare and environmental considerations work closely together.

Land-based salmon farming with modern RAS technology

At Skagen Salmon, salmon farming takes place using a Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) – a technology that makes it possible to purify and reuse the vast majority of the water. Water from the Skagerrak circulates through the system and is continuously purified using, amongst other things, biological and mechanical filters as well as UV treatment.

At the same time, this land-based farming method makes it possible to carefully control conditions such as water quality and temperature. This creates a stable environment for the salmon throughout their development and gives Skagen Salmon a high degree of control over the farming conditions.

Focus on the environment and resource utilisation

An essential part of the philosophy behind Skagen Salmon's land-based salmon farming is to limit the impact on the surrounding environment. Only a minor part of the water is discharged back into the sea, and before that happens, more than 90 percent of the nitrogen and phosphorus is removed.

Even the residue from the water purification is utilised. The sludge is sent to a nearby biogas plant, where it is used for energy. In this way, resources from the salmon farming become part of a larger cycle.

The closed RAS system also means that the salmon are kept separated from the natural stocks in the sea. This avoids the risk of salmon escapes, which can occur with traditional sea-based farming methods.

Quality salmon from Skagen

At Skagen Salmon, between 3,600 and 4,000 tonnes of salmon are farmed annually.

The controlled conditions regarding water, temperature and the development of the salmon contribute to a salmon with a firm flesh structure, a fresh taste and a relatively low fat content.

With its location in Skagen and water from the Skagerrak, Skagen Salmon combines modern technology with the unique maritime surroundings at the top of Denmark.

The result is a new perspective on how salmon farming can take place on land with a focus on quality, resource utilisation and consideration for the environment.
